LERN Research Workshops 2011/12

We are delighted to announce the LERN Research Workshop Series for 2011/12. We have planned three exciting workshops which are all to be held at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in London. Each workshop engages with important themes in legal education research and is designed to encourage participation and interaction. We encourage you to attend the full day but we will do our best to arrange the activities so as to accommodate those who can only attend for half a day.

Next Workshop:

Workshop 3: 14th March 2012

Managing qualitative research

Details of all the workshops can be found below and a booking form can be downloaded here.

Workshop 1:  Exploring new themes for legal education research (26th October 2011)

The first LERN workshop of 2011/12 was a great succees. We were delighted that Professor Malcolm Tight, Professor of Higher Education at Lancaster University could join us to lead the morning session and the afternoon panel session with Alison Bone, Graeme Broadbent, Tony Bradney, Andrew Francis and Fiona Cownie lead a lively and really interesting discussion.

The full programme is available here and you can also download a short workshop report and Professor Tight's outline paper.

Workshop 2: Planning and developing qualitative projects (Cancelled and to be rearranged in late Spring)

This will be a highly interactive Workshop, using exercises, role play and other techniques to explore and develop skills such as interviewing (face to face and telephone), using focus groups effectively and ethnographic and action research. The Workshop will explore research options, including using survey methods and the question of finding the ‘best’ method for the project in mind. An emphasis will be placed on dealing with common problems and ‘banana skins’. Workshop facilitators include Vera Bermingham, Avrom Sherr, Lisa Webley, Jess Guth, Fiona Cownie and Pat Leighton.

The programme for the day (subject to change) is available here

Workshop 3: Managing qualitative research (14th March 2012)

This Workshop will deal with some of the wider yet essential aspects of a research project. It will deal with funding, ethical issues and approval, managing the project, team building and, critically, the issue of effective dissemination so as to achieve maximum impact. Details of the day are avaialble here.
